Acer shows off convertible touchscreen Chromebook

A tablet and Chromebook in one

Even though ChromeOS isn’t really designed for touchscreens, that hasn’t stopped Acer for making the Chromebook R11. This is the first Chromebook convertible hybrid we’ve seen, changing into a full-on tablet.
The hinge can flip back just far enough so that the entire computer can be stood on end like a tent or just half way so that the keyboard acts as a stand for the screen. It’s a mechanism first seen in Lenovo’s Yoga series. These orientations are potentially useful for watching video or browsing through photos. It can also be bent far enough back that it lies flat against the underside of the laptop so you can it like a tablet, albeit a particularly thick and chunky one. Unsurprisingly, we found controlling certain parts of the ChromeOS interface to be very fiddly due to the small onscreen controls.
Aside from this somewhat unusual hinge, the Chromebook R11 is very similar to other ChromeOS laptops in the same price range. It weighs 1.25kg and comes equipped with 802.11ac. The 11.6in screen has a resolution of 1366x768 pixels which won’t suit a lot of people. For some, that many pixels in such a relatively small screen will be hard to read. For others, it won’t be enough and will make multitasking or using particularly complex apps with lots of controls, palettes and windows feel cramped.
We also found the screen to be quite dim. Sadly, this is the norm for cheap Chromebooks rather than the exception.
The plain plastic casing will be available in either black or white, but the pre-production units we saw at Acer’s IFA booth felt very cheaply made and bent and creaked alarmingly under pressure. At least the keyboard felt comfortable and responsive in our brief hands-on time with it.
The Acer Chromebook R11 will cost £229 when it goes on sale in the UK from mid-October.

Shaping the workplace of the future

Businesses must cater for the data demands of mobile, social and the IoT without disrupting day-to-day operations or security...

Some 200 billion tweets are created every year. Annual email volumes are expected to grown from 3.9 billion accounts in 2013 to 4.9 billion by the end of 2017, according to the Radicati Group. Facebook just hit the one billion-user milestone.
All of these statistics have a common theme: They potentially represent a massive business and IT headache – and opportunity.
The majority (some 90 per cent) of the data in existence today, was created in just the last two years, according to IBM. Add that fact to the growing volume of data generated by mobile devices – there are now more mobile phones than people in the world  - and the IoT and it's clear the world has gone data mad.

The ‘want it now’ culture

The situation is certain to increase as next-generation workers expect the same levels of access and immediacy to information and tools in the workplace as they do at home. They don't just want that data yesterday, they increasingly want to interact with intelligent systems that have anticipated what they might need before they even know themselves.
Consumers are already turning to the cloud to help them manage their busy personal lives on the go and many businesses, too, have woken up to cloud’s potential to help cope with the data deluge.
But simply throwing everything into the cloud and hoping for the best is not, never has been nor never will be, a solid or successful business strategy.
How then, can enterprises ensure they're taking advantage of cloud to create an agile, flexible and secure workplace of the future figure?
"Business leaders are going through one of the most profound changes in the industry, brought on by the need to rapidly transform their business operations in today's digital revolution," said Robert LeBlanc, Senior Vice President, IBM Cloud.
Predictions as to the size of our data addiction vary wildly, but one thing is certain and that’s the fact we will need somewhere to store it all. IDC has suggested that 80 per cent of new cloud applications will be Big Data-intensive.

Fuelling innovation through innovation

IBM has responded to this challenge with a series of new innovations – in addition to a multi-billion dollar investment in global cloud centres – designed to help organisations maximise business value, but minimise risk in this new, data-driven and uber-connected world.
IBM’s Bluemix development platform and the 2013 acquisition of SoftLayer play a key and continued role in anticipating and proactively addressing changing market and customer requirements.
At the company’s 2015 InterConnect conference, a number of announcements were made that feed into this cloud vision to help organisations unleash the benefits afforded by hybrid cloud – which is expected to be the dominant model for enterprises in the future.  They are all based on the principles of using open standards to boost developer productivity and further drive business value.
These include:
  • IBM Enterprise Containers – These help developers more quickly and easily create apps that have enterprise-level control, security and visibility via native Linux containers and Docker APIs. These also allow cloud-created development efforts – whether due to size or security can’t remain there - to be ported to on-premise systems.
  • IBM DataWorks – An intuitive way to find, refine, enrich and deliver data in a trusted manner so that developers can take advantage of public and private data sets for enterprise cloud benefit.
  • Collaborative Operations – To enable businesses to better view and control their own customers’ hybrid environments.
  • Orchestration-as-a-Service – The largest federated orchestration library in the industry, which enables management of hybrid environments.
  • Enhanced security features – to protect the applications and data that matter to businesses most.
  • Developer productivity tools – These include a Secure Passport Gateway, which offers secure, self-service data and service connections to Bluemix; API Harmony, which matches APIs and makes it much easier to expose and manage them; Bluemix Local, which provides borderless management and visibility to extend Bluemix into an organisation’s datacentre; The Watson Zone, which unites APIs, training resources, sample code and use cases to help shape the next-generation of intelligent hybrid cloud apps.
"Today, we have a new class of hybrid cloud innovations that extend open standards capabilities for the enterprise. This will help break down the barriers between clouds and on premise IT systems, providing clients with control, visibility and security as they utilise the public and private clouds," said Robert LeBlanc, senior vice president, IBM Cloud.
"Data location across an ever growing number of clouds is an increasing concern for customers and we are unveiling new portability and developer services to make this easier to manage.”

LG G4 and LG G4 Pro (V10): specs and features
The LG G4 sports a slightly curved screen with an optional leather backing. Inside, the phone features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset with Hexa-core processor, Adreno 418 GPU and 3GB RAM. The stock OS is Android 5.1 Lollipop with LG UX v4.0 tweaks. The phone has a 5-inch QHD Quantum Display IPS LCD screen with 534ppi and Gorilla Glass.
The rear camera is a 16-megapixel affair with laser autofocus, dual LED flash, OIS and 2160p video recording. The 8-megapixel front-facing camera features 1080p video calling.
There is also 32GB built-in memory and with an expandable card slot, Dolby mobile sound improvement and a 3000mAh battery.
Meanwhile, the V10 is expected to boast a 2560 x 1440 5.7-inch QHD resolution screen, a 2.1-inch 1024 x 160 secondary display, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable memory and a 3,000 mAh battery. It is also powered by Qualcomm's hexa-core Snapdragon 808 SoC and runs on Android Marshmallow.
The V10 is a higher-end phone than its LG G4 brethren with a frame composed of SAE grade 316L stainless steel. A Dura-Guard frame surrounds the device to protect the phone from bumps and knocks; this has been rated MIL-STD-810G Transit Drop Compliant for shocks. There is also a Dura Skin coating on the back and bottom of the display.
In addition to the primary display, a second 2.1in IPS panel sits just above the main screen with a matching 513ppi pixel density. This is always on, even when the other display is on standby. LG claims this won’t affect battery life. This second screen is used to show weather, time, date and battery icon or app shortcuts.
The LG V10 has two front cameras, capable of capturing wide-angle selfies of up to 120 degrees without having to pan the smartphone. These cameras can be paired with the 16-megapixel camera for a feature called Multi-View recording that lets a user record a scene from all angles, letting them pick the best one.
There is also a manual mode for video that allows adjustment of shutter speed, frame rate, ISO, white balance, and focus, all while recording video.
The LG V10 comes with 64GB of onboard storage and supports microSD card expansion up to two terabytes. The V10 has 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM, as opposed to the G4’s 3GB.
There is also a removable 3000mAh battery that LG claims will only take around 40 minutes to get to a 50 percent charge, this is due to the device supporting Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 technology.

Over-2-million-new-digital-jobs-expected-by-2020

Concentration of job growth in South has prompted O2 to create its Digital Communities programme

Over 2 million skilled workers will be needed by 2020 in order to fulfil the UK’s digital potential, according to new research from O2.
The research, conducted by Development Economics, indicates that 47 per cent of new jobs in the digital sector will be in London and the South East of England. To encourage businesses and citizens outside of the capital to likewise take advantage of opportunities, O2 has launched a Digital Communities pilot in St. Helens.
Following post-recession recovery of the labour market, 766,000 jobs are still projected to be created in the next five years, providing the UK with potential growth.
Yet most of the benefits of the digital economy are expected to remain in London and the surrounding region with nearly half (47 per cent) of new positions based in the South East. The next highest level—a meagre 8 per cent—of job creation is predicted in the North West and East of the nation.
At the launch of the O2 and St. Helens Digital Communities pilot, Ben Dowd, O2 Business Director, voiced concerns about the concentration of opportunities in the South and the economy’s digital immaturity, despite the encouraging prospect of job creation.
“We’re committed to playing our part – which is why we’ve launched an ambitious partnership with St Helens Council to show other communities what’s possible when they put connectivity at their heart,” he said.
“We’re helping analogue businesses go digital; matching local companies with the digital talent on their doorstep, and supporting the Council to offer more digital services, to create a blueprint for other communities up and down the country. We’re working towards a more Digital Britain, where the entire nation can feel the benefits of the UK’s growing digital economy and we’re starting in St Helens.”
The Digital Communities pilot has been created to show how connectivity can have a positive impact in communities across the country. The project intends to help at least ten analogue businesses convert to digital technology, match tech-savvy young people with their local businesses for mutually-beneficial partnerships, offer 60 grants to the area’s young entrepreneurs, host a community hackathon, and organize over 60 workshops to inform the public on technology relevant to them.
The Digital High Street Index, created in March by O2 and the Department of Communities and Local Government, will be used to track changes in digital engagement and connectivity in the area and polling of businesses and citizens alike will be conducted to gauge the community’s responses to the initiative.
Barrie Grunewald, St. Helens Council Leader, said, “Raising our digital profile will not only boost our commercial and employment prospects, but help to connect our communities and deal with issues like social isolation.
“This is a tremendously exciting project that will hopefully whet the appetite for greater involvement with technology among our young people, older people, businesses, agencies, and other institutions. There are plenty of opportunities and I would encourage everyone to embrace them.”
A report published in 2013 predicted that there would be 750,000 new digitally skilled jobs by 2017, but that number has since been reassessed to 1.1m due to growth within the British economy.
